Laugh out loud!

Auckland Scene: We’re about halfway through the NZ Comedy Gala when my brother sniffs disapprovingly and harrumphs, “the problem with NZ comedy now is that everyone’s just copying Rhys Darby,” he says, a strange concoction of bemused disappointment.

Ewen Gilmour for Super City Mayor!

It seems like only the other week it was NZ comedy festival 2009, which leaves me to consider that I am either stuck in some kind of Quantum Leap (great show that turned out to be), or that the last year has been so achingly dull that my mind has struck it from my inner annals. Either way, it’s that time again, and it’s totally worth getting out of your brick n’ tile to experience some shits n’ giggles in Auckland City.

Cheap Rhys Darby impersonators aside, we’re playing host to some pretty funny folk this year – locals are in fine force; there’s a brilliant tribute to the post-Michael Jackson, soulless world from wunderkind Heidi O’Loughlin and Ewan Gilmour’s hilarious campaign for Supercity Mayor-dom (last time I saw that guy he was giving some farmer’s wife a good heckling in a Raglan bar, bless.)

Dreaming of Maeve...

As far as the internationals, you’d be downright silly to miss Maeve Higgins, the awkward Irish lass who had the whole room in stitches. Funny story actually; I interviewed Maeve for the festival last year and had a weird dream about her the night before. I chose to use the dream as an icebreaker, which just made her feel horribly awkward. Actually, that story’s more of a tragedy.
